PCOS
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common hormonal disorders in women, yet it's frequently misunderstood and undertreated. At Concierge Endocrinology, we take a comprehensive, compassionate approach to PCOS — addressing not just the symptoms, but the underlying metabolic and hormonal imbalances driving them.
Understanding PCOS
PCOS is more than irregular periods. It's a complex hormonal disorder characterized by the overproduction of androgens (male hormones), a condition known as hyperandrogenism. This hormonal imbalance disrupts the normal menstrual cycle, causes irregular periods, and interferes with ovulation — leading to subfertility or infertility. The name comes from the presence of multiple small, immature ovarian follicles that appear as cysts on the ovaries, unable to mature and release eggs due to hormonal imbalances.
Metabolic Impact of PCOS
PCOS is associated with several serious metabolic issues. Many women with the condition are overweight or obese and have elevated insulin levels, which increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and fatty liver disease. By age 40, about 10% of overweight women with PCOS develop type 2 diabetes, and up to 35% develop prediabetes. Women with PCOS are also at higher risk for metabolic syndrome, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, and mood disorders like depression.
